Five best press photos awarded



The five best press photos in the "Second Press Photo Exhibition 2062" were awarded in a program in Kathmandu Sunday evening.

The one week long photo exhibition began on April 26 at Nepal Art Council in Kathmandu, organized by Nepal Forum of Photo Journalists (NFPJ) and sponsored by Photo Concern Pvt. Ltd.

The winning photos were chosen by visitors who placed three thousand votes.



A beggar couple kissing each other after getting delicious food by Ram Humagai, a tearful reunion of school children with their parents upon their release by Maoists by Sagar Shrestha, an innocent child looking at a truck torched by Maoists by Ravi Manandhar, a full moon by Rajesh Dhungana and a holy lamp lit in the face of dead body prior to cremation by Nuchhe Man Dongol were voted the best five.



Chairman of Photo Concern Pvt. Ltd. and senior photographer D B Thapa distributed the awards to the best five photojournalists in the program. Director of the Photo Concern Srijana Thapa, vice-chairman Rajesh Dhungana and General Secretary of NFPJ Dhurba Ale spoke in the program highlighting the importance of the exhibition and the role photographs play to promote recent happenings, social change, modernization, traditions, lifestyles and other various aspects of the nation.



A total of 101 photos of 58 photojournalists working in various newspapers were exhibited in the exhibition.

The exhibition was organized on the occasion of National Press Photo Day, which is celebrated every year on Baishak 13th in commemoration of the first press photo published in Gorkhapatra on Baishak 13th 1984 B.S

yes, thank you for posting these! i couldn't find the other photo on nepalnews either....the full moon photo is a beautiful picture, but seems so out of place here. the first one is so gentle and tender. the one of the small kids looking at the burning truck is amazing! i'm surprised this is the first time i've seen this photo- it has the potential to become a legendary image of nepal's war. similar to the way that one photo of the young, naked vietnamese girl running and screaming down the street has become an icon of the vietnam war. as for the last photo, it's absolutely heartbreaking.

And that naked vietnamese girl is already taruni, who was adopted by a canadian family. Just recently she graduated. Somewhere in Toronto area.

thanks for posting the photo, bedrock. as overwhelmingly devastating as it is, it is an image that everyone should see. one that can teach more lessons than any textbook or lecture.

in reading her story, i couldn't help but think about how many cambodian survivors of the khmer rouge have also come to terms, come to peace with the tragic recent history of their country. and what was done to them, their families, their friends. they have forgiven. they see no sense in holding on to hatred or anger. i truly hope the nepali people will learn this lesson too, so that the country can move on- and move ahead- for a better future.

another photographer/photograph you may want to know about if you don't already is kevin carter. he took a famous photo of a young sudanese child on the brink of starvation in the early/mid 90s. and a vulture is just waiting for the child to pass so it can feed. it was an award-winning photograph and won carter numerous awards and a great deal of publicity, but his fame led to feelings of guilt and the image haunted him to the point where he committed suicide. a very interesting, very powerful story. here's a link to read a bit more- http://www.thisisyesterday.com/ints/KCarter.html
