The Black Day!

It's been twenty-five years, and we still don't know what happened that night in Narayanhiti on June 1st, 2001! Well, the official report tells us that then Crown Prince Dippy was drunk and then sober again and decided to go on a rampage by killing mostly the senior Royals, including his own parents and siblings, and then himself as well.

Many Nepalis still wonder if it was really Dippy, foreign hands, or even some Royal family members involved in this incident. We might never know the full truth, but instead of trying to be a brilliant or a really crazy conspiracy theorist, it is time to move on and also look back on what has happened since the Royal Massacre that night.

Twenty-five years later, we are here, with a new 'young guns' government in place, trying its best to dismantle the decades of open loot and nepotism and politicization of our judiciary, police force and the civil service.

Everybody remembers King Birendra as a decent king who cared about his people. I guess we Nepalis tend to talk well about the dead but curse them while alive. I still remember the days when we were out on the streets demanding the death of the monarchy and how we wanted all the money back from Phampa Devi's account in the Swiss banks.

Today, we talk about how we should get the dirty money hoarded by Deuba, Prachanda, Oli, and our shady byaparis, jholeys, and hakims in foreign banks. We know very well that we will not get their ill-gotten wealth back. The foreign countries are not only smart but look the other way when it comes to getting dirty millions in deposits in their banks, but want us to tighten the financial flows in our banks because they think we are all laundering illegal money.

Many folks still blame King Gyanendra for the Royal Massacre. In my personal opinion, if that was true, then he would not have left Narayanhiti quietly when our EU-funded and RAW-ified lawmakers decided to declare us a Republic and then asked him to vacate the Royal Palace.

And all the properties in Late King Birendra's name were nationalized, but instead of making good use of them, many of those properties were leased out to our Sherpa byapari from the Yeti group for peanuts while millions flowed to the UML bank account and some to Oli Ba and his cronies as well.

Many of us were shocked to see the inside of the Narayanhiti and then realized that our Kings and the Royal members lived a very simple life, and their beds and furniture were all old-school, while the likes of Deuba and Prachanda enjoyed their lives as if they were brothers of the Sultan of Brunei.

I don't think the monarchy is coming back. If PM Balen can remain silent and do his thing, RSP will turn out to be like PAP in Singapore and probably rule for many decades to come. We grew up in the Rip Off the Public (Republic) regime. Our kids will grow up in a country where accountability, transparency, and good governance are in place.

The haters may whine, bitch, and roll over on the streets, but the country is finally in good hands. Yes, we need to work on our border issues, but the same old chors who sold Mahakali to the Indians need not show us their fake patriotism again and think we will follow them like the Pied Piper of Berlin.
