Hi all,

Which one do you think is the best Nepali restaurant in Queens?  I know, it's a very subjective question and depends on one's taste and likings.  But if you were recommend one, which restaurant would it be?

Thanks.

Woodside cafe is a C grade restaurant. i was there couple of weeks ago and while we were seated on the corner table far from the restroom, smell of phenyl was oozing out of it. it was gross. because of the smell we didn't enjoy the food wholeheartedly . while chatamari was outstanding and delicious, beyond my expectation, I find the whole dining experience quite mediocre at best. other foods were okay too but bhutan was quite bad for my taste. usually bhutan is pan fried to became crisp but it was soggy and chewy and underdone.

the next day i was at lali guras. even though it is another C grade restaurent, but was outstanding. we tried bhutan, khasi ko tauko and momo and ordered food were delicious. bhutan from this place was far better than bhutan from woodsafe. momo from lali guras was even better and cheaper than the one from woodside cafe.

I have also bad experience with woodside cafe , one time i ordered fried momo and they send almost burnt "pitho ko dalla" and i am not so much fan of Newari food so i prefer cheap, fast and best Namaste momo.
for some leisure time and family environment Yak has no other option.

Thanks again, facebook, and dolphin.

I heard Yeti of Heizen is decent, as well as Sakura (sounds Japanese, but it is actually Nepali re).  Yelp showed Thakali Kitchen.  I wonder if it is affiliated with Thakali Kitchen of Darbar Marg.  I was also told Himalayan Yak is very good, especially since they have "pharmaisi geet karyakram" entertainment.

You concur?

I travel to NY quite often from my place. here is my experience with Nepali restaurant..though I have not been to all..

1.Thakali Kitchen --best food,  good service, decent rate, never been disappointed.
2. Yak restaurant ---good food,  disappointing service,  i understand when they are busy but even if they are not busy, (before live music begins) service is real bad..very disappointing..i took some of my collegues for dinner and had a real bad experience.., decent rate ,,
3. Sagarmatha --- i did not enjoy their food, they also have live music..but i did not like their food at all for some reason.
4. Bhim's cafe (i donot know if this name is correct)--good food specially  momo and thali..cheap price, service is like nepal ma saunu ko pasal..where we say sauni ek plate momo ;) and they will bring it..

so..i am not sure about other restaurants..

I havent herd that name "Yeti of Heizen" !!
Sagarmatha is worst restaurant to go; if you wanna have a bad time go there ! Namaste momo is of same owner : look like nepal ko hotel ; fast service too.
Thakali kitchen has best Thali ( Dal bhat tarkari)
Laliguras is good too.
Namaste , lali guras , bhims cafe are like hotel of nepal. Not really restaurant . (Good for short time food like momo sel )
Yak , nepal-japan , woodside cafe , sagarmatha actually restaurant.

I have been to Thakali Kitchen many times and I think they are the best in NY.  The only another restaurant that comes close to Thakali is Shangrial in Toronto.  Both of these places have authentic neplia only menu unlike many Nepali restaurant that have all Indian food in their menu except momo.

While in Queens, I remember going to an Indian restaurant called "Boti Boti" or something. The food was awesome and ridiculously cheap. You might wanna try it as well.

Thanks riddle, but my schedule permits only one evening in New York, so I can check out only one establishment.  Surmising from above postings and online reviews, I think Thakali Kitchen would probably be the best option for me tonight.  Will let everybody know how it goes, not that I am a trained restaurant critic, so forgive the hubris.

As promised, here is my brief write-up:

We went to Thakali restaurant at Jackson Height in Queens, NY last Friday evening.  Parking was not a problem; we easily found a road side spot not too far from the restaurant.  There were lot of Indian, Bangladeshi, Chinese and Latino stores, mostly selling groceries in the neighborhood.  I thought a good place to eat and shop.  I could hear Nepali being spoken here and there quite often, meaning there seemed to be lot of Nepalis walking around, and I turned around everytime and smiled at my supposed fellow country-people, but nobody seemed to care.  They were probably thinking I am such a "paakhe", which in a sense I was.

I had found (quite a few years ago) the decor in Thakali Kitchen restaurant in Durbar Marg, Kathmandu, quite striking.  This Thakali Kitchen's decor was not.  There was a big chesum (altar) for Buddha, which was nice, but other than that, the wall decoration seemed like a haphazard Nepali stuff thrown around to accentuate that this is a Nepali establishment rather lazily.  There was a dark bar towards the inside and further down were single-entry restrooms that needed good scrubbing and maintenance.

I thought Friday night would mean the restaurant would be packed.  However, our's and one other were the only tables occupied.  The waiters, one guy and one girl - both young Nepalis, were prompt to take our order but then had to be summoned every time we needed to refill our smallish glasses of water.

Food was rather bland and so-so in taste.  We had Sekuwas (buff, as in Bison) for appetizer and Chicken Chowmein, Chicken Thali and Faaper (buckwheat) ko roti - tarkari for main dish.  My taste-buds found timmoor ko achar quite zesty, but not so much others.  "You drove here so far and so long for this meal?" they were asking my brain.  "At least, the portions are decent" was the reply.

Price was not that bad.  $55 including tax and 20% tip.

Would I recommend the restaurant?  Well, try other places and keep this as a back-up.

Thanks everyone.
