"Dear all, Attached please find an email we received from a rude person by the name of Madhu Aryal. He has blatantly attacked Nepal Sambat, Nepal Bhasa, origin of Newars and overall Newar integrity. Madhu seems to have reacted to NESOCA Nepal's message (No. 2252) in response to Mukta Nepal's message (No. 2250) at http://groups.yahoo.com/group.nepalwatch. He has also addressed his mail to the above group. But the message has not been displayed as yet. The owner/moderator might have disapproved it. NESOCA Nepal issues this UREGENT CALL and requests all its self-esteemed contacts to expressly react to the above email. If you are not a member of the above group, please hurry up to join it by browsing http://groups.yahoo.com/group.nepalwatch. NESOCA Nepal has requested the group's owner/moderator to display the message. If they still do not display the message, please write directly to Mahdu Aryal at madhuaryal@gmail.com. We suggest you to use a separate web-based email account to maintain privacy of your normal working email account in order to avert possibility of troubles Madhu may create. _____________ NESOCA Nepal " This is the email sent by Madhu Aryal to NESCOA "If Nepal sambat has some contributions to the myths of making gold out of sand by a mystic and if YOU still keep believing in such myths, shove it into your head. Don't corrupt others head. Myths of that time has been full of lies and were unbelievably inflated. Advocates of Nepal sambat have mostly been those who speak Newari dialect and think Newari dialect should be the national language of Nepal which, if you have noticed, was derived from Tibetan language. When Newari businessmen were involved in trade with Tibet they invented this mix dialect for their use with Tibetans. If you notice, rich Newars in Kathmandu amashed their properties thru their trade with Tibet. Newars are Mongolian left outs in the kingdom (when Mongolians ruled our country) who pose as a minor tribe but have a strong hold in Kathmandu primarily because of their business and property amass. And it makes no sense at all to the use the sambat 1126 years of Sankhadhar's myths and lies. Come on guys, wake up. Don't corrupt others mind. We have internationalised Maoism( which does not exist in this world anymore than in China, if at all) for the sake of regional (especially India's) extremist communists' vested interests as they want to make a weak Nepal as their safe haven for extreme communist interests, royal family killings and corrupt Democracy of all those looters like Surya Bahadur Thapa, Girija Koirala, Jhal Nath Khanal, Sher Bdr Deupa (who authorised Nepal's tax money to buy Pajeros and MP's benefits?) and their notorous gangs. Enough of short-sightedness of us all! May Gautam Buddha bless us all Nepalese for some Bodhisatva or wisdom to bring unity back on track for peace, progress and prosperity. This is the world of globalization.... If you kill me now, somebody will kill you soon. Nature bounces the act, a thing you throw up will fall down vigorously. You reap what you sow, you ARE what you do and what you eat! One makes a silly judgement in Nepal now and the world can't keep watching do all that. Geographical boundaries are for sick political interests only and not for prosperity and harmony among civilised global citizens. Don't use the word nationalism for your vested self-interests. I appreciate intelligent comments not anger filled ones. Think before you write! May Dipawali enlighten your mind and fill your heart with warm devotion for a common cause. Cheers"

I am waiting for the day when people will take each other as an individual more than ones association like family, religion, country, caste, profession, blood, color, race, class, school and etc. Race, caste, religion etc don't have brain, nor do they have souls. So let's blame or praise ram prasad, ram lal whatever you wish. You are fool to say bahuns ruined the country. Newars are trash is another stupid thing to say. ___________________________ MADHU says, Newars are Mongolian left outs in the kingdom (when Mongolians ruled "our" country) And it makes no sense at all to the use the sambat 1126 years of Sankhadhar's myths and lies. ___________________________ >> Madhu it's not just your country. Myth or lie, it's a belief. Recognition of a good deed. Don't take it hard man, Respect those good qualities, even you don't think that particular trait holder doesn't exist. __________________________________ Anu>> BHAUN IS THE ONE f@@kING UP the Nepal not Newar >>>>>>>>> Nice to know but could you please name that bahun. And if you feel that someone else is f* up the country then let him/her be in the list too.

Dear readers, There's some weight on Mr.Aryal's words. We can doubt that story coz' how can one convert sand to gold. But I'd disagree with him about his saying that Newars came from Mongolia to Nepal n' Mongolia ruled Nepal. What does he has to say about Shakya (Mr. Buddha)? n' I don't think newars want to make Newari as national language. But they just want to protect their language make it the regional language (like India does in different states). I'm ready to believe even above line if he can show me some evidence. It's not only the bahuns who sucked our country, definitely there're some newars too. But the point is that whoever had the power (gov. positions) sucked it. So, more than 90% (don't know exact figure) of Civil service employees, most of PMs, ministers, n' leaders happened to be from bahuns. But rest 10% (or perhaps more) who belong to other castes like newars, madhesis, limbus, gururngs or any other caste) getting into these position also worked hand in hand with them n' they didn't suck less than so called bahuns. I'd read 1 article from Kanak Mani Dixit on Himal Magazine blaming bahuns for our country lacking behind. There're were some statistics on that article. But the irony is that it has also to be written by a bahun. LET's NOT PROMOTE HATRED AMONG US (NEWARS vs. bahuns or vs. madhesis or any other castes) n' also against other fellows (like PAKIs or BLACKs) ! There's both good n' bad fellows in every religion, castes, n' country. So let's not judge according to the category they belong to.

I think what Aryal suggested about Newar being mongolian left out may be the link between the Earlier rulers of Nepal ,The Kiratis, today's Rai n limbus( the earliest and the longest ruler of Nepal who later on eastablished theirkingdoms in the eastern side of nepal until the shah king's unification) and not the rulers from mongolia. 'Another remarkable event during the kiratas period is the coming of Gautam Buddha in the time of the seventh king. The Buddha supposedly spent time in Patan, where he elevated the blacksmith caste to goldsmiths and bestowed upon them the name of his own clan, Sakya.'- abstacted from a history website. NEWAR are the original natives of this land having it's link to the earliest inhabitants. Some also give a theory which says ' Newar was term originated to refer to people from kathmandu valley-at a time of valley blockage - which later on became a 'tribe' on it's own ."

Hey Guys, We are educated enough to write and say something that is good to everyone. So why are we stuck together somewhere to blame each other. I am Bahun but most of my closest and dearest friends are Newars, Gurungs, Magars and other castes. We never have any problems in our relations because of the Caste system. You all are well-educated and what makes u feel like you are arrogant. You know why We didn't rise, because and only because people like u are the ones who misled the country and the society. This same weakness of people like us have given Maoists and other political parties to rule over us by dividing Nepalese in different races and origins. I felt pity on all you who wrote for and against any castes and races. And more shameful are those who put ghee on fire. I will list some of the Bhrstachari Bahuns, Newars and other castes and found out urself who is to be blamed a person or the special caste: Bhrastachari bahuns: Gobinda Raj Joshi(Congress) Girija Pd Koirala(" ") Jhalanath Khana(CPN UML) Arjun Narsingh KC(Congress) Modnath Prasrit(CPN UML) Laxman Aryal(Congress) K P OLi(CPN UML) Debi Prasad Ojha(" ") Chiranjibi Wagle (Congress) Baburam Bhattrai (Maoist) Prachanda(Maoist) Bhrastachari Newars and other castes: Gyanendra Shah (Raja) Parash(Yubraj) Surya Bdr Thapa (RPP) Pashupati Shumsher(RPP) Prakash Chandra Lohani(RPP) Dr. Tulsi Giri(RPP) Jagat Gauchan(RPP) Niranjana Thapa (RPP) Padma Sundar Lawati (RPP) KAmal Thapa (RPP) Gopal Man singh (Congress) Marichman Shrestha(Panche) P L Singh (Congress) Narayan Singh Pun (Smata PArty) ans so on.... All the Army Chiefs(Most of them are Rajabadi) Polce chief(Mix) Lawyers(Mix) So what we can conclude from thisis that we general people have been divided into races and groups and the leaders are united together to rape our society and the country. So wake up guys do not blame each other. Let's wipe out those Bhrastacharis from our country then the golden days will come soon.

Sankhadhar Sakhwa And Nepal Samvat By Rajendra Shakya, KATHMANDU: The initiation of Nepal Samvat, possibly the only era in the world that is named after a country, has two individuals involved in the process. It involves Sankhadhar Sakhwa, the sponsor who relieved debts of the whole country's population, and King Raghava Dev, the king of Lalitpur who ordered the initiation of the new era. During the reign of King Raghava Dev, Sankhadhar, a local businessman, acquired a large amount of gold in some mysterious fashion. Sankhadhar himself is a mysterious figure in the Nepalese history, and the way he acquired the necessary amount to free people from their debts is equally, if not less, mysterious. Some believe he was a businessman, a money lender, a potter, while some say he was a peasant. The severe lack of historic proof of Sankhadhar's existence has raised questions on the historicity of this national luminary. Not much is known about his birth and life, except for he was a resident of Kantipur, now known as Kathmandu city, and he died 10 years after the commencement of Nepal Samvat. Gopalraj Vamshawali, the chronicle considered most reliable to date for the study of Nepalese history, has remained silent on Sankhadhar, which suggests that Sankhadhar is only a mythical figure. However, we can find frequent references to Sankhadhar in modern chronicles. The modern chronicles, popularly called Bhasa Vamshawali, say Sankhadhar cleverly bought the loads of sand from porters, who were taking them to the royal palace as per a confidential order of their King Aananda Dev, the ruler of Bhaktapur. The sand was taken out from Lakhu Tirtha, a river in eastern Kathmandu currently known as Swarnawati. Sankhadhar was overridden with joy as the sand turned into gold after four days. He thought of using the newfound fortune for a good cause. He took permission of the king to free all the people of the country from their debts and started a new era. Many people find the story hard to digest, as sand itself turning into gold seems quite unnatural. However, there are some facts that suggest that it is possible. The name Lakhu is a derivative of Lun Khu, which means 'river of gold' in the local Newar language. The river's Sanskrit name Swarnawati also possess the same meaning. And still in western Nepal, there are people who make their livings by taking out gold from the sand of Karnali River. There is a place called Sunkhani in Dolakha, where people used to take out gold from mines. These facts suggest that sand can turn into gold. And considering the population of the valley then, it seems quite possible that the sand that Sankhadhar bought turned into gold, or there were ample amount of gold dusts mixed in it. And he used the gold to relieve all the people from their debts. This great person who had remained hidden in the vastness of Nepalese history for centuries emerged in an inscription of Nepal Samvat 827 belonging to the reigning period of King Bhupatindra Malla, who is credited for the construction of Bhaktapur Royal Palace. The inscription at Jenla Tole of Bhaktapur has mentioned ?Nepal Bhakha Sankhwa Samvat,' a clear reference to Shankhadhar Sakhwa. Many eras have prevailed in Nepalese history. Kaligat Samvat, Shak Samvat, Mandev Samvat, Nepal Samvat and Bikram Samvat are the eras mostly brought into use by the rulers then. Nepal Samvat is 802 years junior to Shak Samvat, which is considered to be the Early Lichhavi Samvat. Similarly, the Later Lichhavi Samvat is popular known as Mandav Samvat, named after King Mandev II who commenced it. Shak Samvat was in use for 498 years while Mandev Samvat remained the official era for 304 years. But the era that received official recognition for the longest period of time in Nepalese history is Nepal Samvat. Its earliest record of its official use dates back to NS 290 in a colophon of 'Shiva Dharma Shastra.' There are other earlier records too but they don't clearly state the name Nepal Samvat. However, historians believe that the era is Nepal Samvat. Nepal Samvat remained the official era throughout the medieval period of Nepalese history. It was only with the fall of Malla Empire in the valley that the official use of this era came to an end. However, it was still used ocasionally along with Bikram Samvat. Later, Chandra Shumsher Rana, the most dominant prime minister of the Rana Regime, officially brought Bikram Samvat in use in 1903 AD. It was NS 1023 then. And, this year, we are observing the 1126th year of Nepal Samvat. Professor Kilhorn is credited for converting Nepal Samvat into the Gregorian calendar and deriving the difference of time period between the two eras. His findings show that Nepal Samvat was commenced on October 20, 879 AD, Thursday. The new year of Nepal Samvat is observed on the first day of the bright lunar fortnight of the month of Kartik, which coincidentally falls on the fourth day of Tihar that the Newar Community observes as Mha Puja, the day when they worship the self for good health and prosperity. It is, however, quite unfortunate that the celebration of the Nepal Samvat New Year is restricted to the Newar community only. Some even call it the Newari Era, which is a derogative term for Nepal Samvat. It is certainly not the legacy of the Newar community only. The era bears the name of our nation, not of any community or person as in Bikram, Shak or Mandev eras. The Nepal Era Calendar as corresponding to the Gregorian and Bikram Era Calendar Month (Nepal Era) (Christian Era) (Bikram Era) 1 Kachhala (Tho / Ga) November Kartik / Mangshir 2 Thinla (Tho / Ga) December Mangshir /Paush 3 Pohela (Tho / Ga) January Paush / Magh 4 Silla (Tho / Ga) February Magh / Falgun 5 Chilla (Tho / Ga) March Falgun / Chaitra 6 Chaula (Tho / Ga) April Chaitra / Baishakh 7 Bachhala (Tho / Ga) May Bhaisakh / Jestha 8 Tachhala (Tho / Ga) June Jestha / Ashar 9 Dilla (Tho / Ga) July Ashar / Shrawan 10 Gunla (Tho / Ga) August Shrawan / Bhadra 11 Yanla (Tho / Ga) September Bhadra / Ashwin 12 Kaula (Tho / Ga) October Ashwin / Kartik Source: http://www.newslinenepal.com/index6.php?type=7&tbl=ace&sno=19

I agree with GWAJYO's (Reminds me of my brothers Nick Name :)) assessment. Lets' not promote hatred among us. I really don't care about Newari being a regional as well nor do I care about where newars or matter of fact any other casts came from. As long as we respect each other as a human being we will all be fine. By the way I do celebrate Nepal Sambat and had a good time this year too. And I am planning to celebrate nepali naya barsa too..

Read the list made by Mr. Shiva_shakti, only two (Mr. marich man n' Mr. P.L.). Both are notorious for their attitude than corruption. Anyway, I don't mean to say that there're no corrupted newars. Parasites exist in all the castes; it's just that bahuns get more opportunity to be parasites than any other castes. So, sometimes it gives bad impression of bahuns to others. So, all of us are asking for equal distribution of it so that everyone (from every caste) gets a chance to be at higher position n' get to suck the blood of poor nepalis (no matter which caste they belong to).

Gwajyo, That list belonging to Shiva-shakti sucks, man. He doesn't even know that K.C isn't a Brahman caste and in fact, Lohani is a Brahman. First he should come up with a proof before he lists someone in there. And it sounds funny when you rule both of the newars out who made it to this so called list blaming for their attitude. Anyway, I didn't mean anything but to clarify and correct the context. As far as equal opportunity to be given to every caste group is concerned, I think it is there. It is just that people have some other problems.

not because it began with fairy tale or it's often connected with newars....nepal sambat sould be our official language because it was born in nepal...nepali soil...it had been in use officially for centuries till ranas replaced it by bikram sambat ....n bikram sambat i's not our creation ..it belongs to india....n...india still claimed it as her calender ..can we feel respect for claiming the thing that's not ours?....if nepal sambat has any shortcoming ..then we can rectify..in today's age...it's not a big deal to play with numbers..we should follow it because it's our unique....it's our own creation...n it's our glory ..n...mr. aryal u claim urself to be a global citizen ...then why u r so impatient n stereotype about particular race...u think newars r inferior b'coz they r da most culturally rich race of the country? ...b'coz they've their own uniqueness in everything from ...food..architect...language...script...clothes...to culture n rites n rituals......newars have toiled hard for centuries to earn land amasses n business n architects in kathmandu valley......besides kathmandu valley is their homeland...if u label them left out mangolian or whatever crap comes into ur mind...then i have label u (in terms of ur own standard of labelling) as trepasser...encroucher

All in all I tend to agree with Gwajyo. Hats off to you dude. Thats the spirit. All these caste system are man made. The most important thing for us is to be a true nepali who regardless of any cast can support for the well being of nepal and nepali. Lets respect all other religions, caste and creed and think together for the benefit of nepal and nepalese or human beings in general. Life is just too short to fight for trivial things as caste, lets try our best to maintain the integrity and spread peace and prosperity among all of us. Long live NEPAL!!!
