In a recent radio show organized by BBC Nepali Sewa, transmitted today (May 17, 2009), Dr. Babu Ram Bhattrai sait he "has a dream of making Nepal atleast like USA or Europe in next 15/ 20 years.". Shouldn't we work to fulfil his dream?

But do we trust his words anymore?

BTW, there is speculation that LTTE's Chairman, Prabhakaran has committed suicide. They are trying to confirm his body doing DNA testing.

Sidster – You mentioned about Maoist victims being vindictive, given your diatribe against the army, what does that make you, especially, now that we know that your gripe against them goes back to your papa’s thrashing in 2046? I am not trying to personalise the issue, but you need to seriously calm down on this one and try to be little less vindictive and more objective.  I also detect a certain amount of nostalgia for the monarchy in what you have stated, in particular, going back to your initial support for that couhon, Gyane. Yes, the Indians used a lot of things against Nepal, but there can be no doubt that if they did get rid of the monarchy, that’s probably one of the better outcomes.

Now let’s get to the point. Barring individual cases of malfeasance, the men and women of the security forces can sleep soundly at night having fought these Maoist terrorists and prevented their outright takeover of Nepal. Notwithstanding the lack of clear strategy at the macro-political level, shortcomings of command and logistics, including communications, the failure to deploy adequate air power in a timely manner and the poor quality of field intelligence and its analysis, they fought splendidly in the most difficult of terrains. They need not apologise to anyone on this score, especially, factoring in the limitations imposed on them at the operational level by virtue of the shelter afforded to these terrorists from across the border to the south. Their efforts truly merit appreciation no matter the many, intense and the repeated assaults they have been subjected to from some quarters, which have sought to vilify and castigate these brave and dedicated men and women as terrorists and their opponents, the Maoists, as the heroes.

In contrast, the Maoist terrorists know that sooner or later, their time of reckoning will come. They have no one but themselves to blame for banking on terrorism as their strategy. With this they fought the wrong war and the outcome for them is certain, annihilation. The world has moved on from giving any leeway to terrorists. Now there can be no second chances. It’s a question of when, not whether they will be finished off. It’s too late for your chum, Baburam – he’s going to get it both ways.

For those who are no longer are prepared to submit to the dictates of these terrorists and live the rest of their lives in subservience to their warped ideology, the willingness, freedom and the ability to fight back is a necessary condition of self-defence, which, in turn, will assist to promote, preserve and nurture a way of life that values plurality and individual freedoms over tyranny. Apparently, you disagree.

Peter,

I can agree with everything you have said about Maoists party and i care less about what people decide for Maoist party as i have decided to honor the rule of democracy be content with what people select to lead the country, but i do not agree with what you have to say about NA. I had already heard those excuses for that corrupt, inefficient, Master and Slave cultured, backward, inept, and law disobeying NA.Just because i do not agree with Maoist ideologies of torture and murder it will not force me to label another equally bad institution a good one.

I would also like to see "what goes comes around" theory applied to Baburam for his directions on tortures and murders to civilians. Lets  hope that Nepal gets a finance minister who is more efficient and productive than Baburam before it comes to him.

Raju,

I saw YCL pictures of the same context you have posted above. Bunch of YCL and PLA members building roads, schools, digging wells, routing rivers to the village for drinking water which are good attempts but it still doesnt compensate all other crimes like murder, torture, harrassment, and rapes.

Sidster - Calling a spade, a spade, sounds like straight-talking to me. That’s what I am about. Maoists are terrorists, Baburam is a terrorist and there is full stop after that. You are the one insisting on adding a whole lot of bull after that – that’s what really stinks.  I am not particularly bothered about how you choose to see me, “a dumbo”, “a pseudo”, “a soothsayer”, “a bimbo” or anything else. This is not about me; it’s about everyone’s right to resist terrorism and to annihilate this monster wherever it raises its ugly head. Equally, it matters not what you are, a PsyOps officer with the NA, Manushi Yami’s lover or Khaptad Baba’s cousin thrice-removed. The only issue where your stance has any bearing is when it comes to the question of whether you support terrorism as a strategy as the Maoists have chosen to do. If you don’t, and I suspect that that is the case, then the only differences we are likely to have is about the means and the timing as to their usage when it comes to fighting against terrorism.

Without rehearsing all that has been repeated above, I happen to think that this is the right time to hit these Maoist terrorists from all sides as the key conditions that proved inimical to their destruction have now been removed or substantially negated (e.g. Gayne’s departure, change in the Indian coalition politics, etc). What I don’t want to see happening, although you have every right to do, is you simply wasting all your time bitching about the army because they beat up your pops. You have done a good job in terms of saying the army is not without imperfections and I would second that and go one further to say that there needs to be substantive reform to bring this institution into the 21st century in spirit. But we simply cannot wait for this to be completed before taking steps to defend ourselves against this continuing terrorist menace. There are some tough choices to be made and the work will not be easy. In tandem, I hope that you and I can agree that no cost-benefit-analysis done by any sane person can ever produce a result that makes it alright to give into terrorism – in our case, to Maoist terrorism, with or without Baburam as its leading functionary.

Peter,

I would not choose to  see you as , “a dumbo”, “a pseudo”, “a soothsayer”, “a bimbo” or anything else.

I can sense that you are informed and at least you have some of your facts together, so when you present your argument it has some weight in it.

Your guess on story on my pops is not fully correct. It may appear that my views are influenced by that event but the truth is not that. The truth is, that event certainly helped me read and find out more about NA and why things occur certain ways in Nepal. The search helped me find out more about what NA was about and what culture they have in them and also made me become politically aware.

You are right...NA needs an overhaul...a total change in its leadership who has gotten there with the petticoat washing culture. They need to bring professionalism in Army. Strong actions should be taken against Army members who are involved in crimes like rape and murders. Those army officers who think/practice that the lower class officers are their own properties should be put on probation. And Army should stay out of politics.

About Baburam...lets hope that Nepal will get more productive and efficient ministers like Baburam who would not have a taint of terrorism in their forehead and would outperform Baburam's work so that we can call the new guy the best finance minister for Nepal to date.

Sid

Sidster - The bottom line here is this: the army should be reformed; the Maoist terrorists (or other terrorists) eliminated – that includes terrorist No. 2 (or is it No. 3 now), Baburam; & a future built based on the principles, practices and goals of a functioning liberal democracy. Agreed?

I can agree with reforming army, and building a future based on principles, practices and the goals of a functioning liberal democracy with the minimum requirement of Minimum Work Ethics expected from the leaders.

Maoists should be fully disarmed and the ones who want to go back to the path of Violence with arms should be dealt with by National Army be it capturing or eliminating them. It is not possible to entirely eliminate the Maoists as 35% of people of Nepal appear to be Maoists or their supporters but the Militias who want to go back to the previous path should be eliminated or captured.

Sid

Sidster - I couldn’t agree with you more on holding our “netas” accountable and dealing firmly with those Maoists that wish to continue down the path of terrorism. So far they have got away with much due to the weaknesses of the opposition – the buffoon Gyane being a case in point. As with any bully, they’ll back down if you show sufficient resolve to take the fight to them and win. That’s what has been sorely lacking in Nepal and there may be some room for optimism due to the changes in the scenario. For the rest that don’t listen, they can look forward to hell. And for Baburam, he is damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t - now that Gayne is not around to save his neck this time. Honestly, what a wasted life!
