Oki.. people help me out here.. I have to do this poll for my Government presentation...:s and dun ask its driving me crazy.. so pls jot down abt this hai... As you must know there are certain quotas in schools, work places etc. for the minorities such as the blacks and women.. It was done around 1960s(way before I was born!!) Anyway.. nowadays too, the quotas still exist and if a minority comes and asks for his/her place in the organisation due to the quota.. they administration have to give it to them. Before they had huge discrimination, but nowadays.. the discrimination has decreased much more. Do you think that the quotas should still exist? I mean should certain % of seats be reserved for the minority or should there be a thing called no dircrimination and thats it. Do you think taking the quotas away will take away the rights of the minorities? Please answer in few words.. please not too long. (And please do answer, you would not want me to flunk would you!!)

Hey rythm, that was the question always revolving around my mind. I could never figure out if that is good or bad or should be there or should not be there. As a matter of fact. I was also one of the victim of those quotas. I believe so called minorities are not getting the seats they deserve from quotas and it all goes to the high ranked officials. It is a politics people are playing around with, it is a sensative issue and should be considered very carefully. Aba bout the question should it be there or not ? Can't say, it should not be there, I would say most probably coz I am a victim of that system but there also are people who would say it should be there. It is like, what u have faced in life determined what u decide on. Hoina ra. me being from so called uppercast, i dont care for that, coz I aint get nothing from this thingy. It is a bullshit for me, but for some it is important. So............................ decide or urself for u. (this is my personal feeling and need not to be accepted by every one, it is open for discussion and I would apologise if it hurts any sentiment)

If I was a majority having equal intellect as my fellow minority and still wouldn't get the job then I would be little dissapointed. We try to assume that we are in state of utoipa where the likes of Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela have changed the way we think. The fact is not completely. If you still look at the stats in States, the minority( mainly comprising of Native AMericns/Blakcs) still struggle to do well. Reason being many. The quote system should be placed not to give unfair advantage to minorities but to represent their community. The result is adverse, people tend to be be motivated with role models.Just imagine, how many blk females want to be Condoleeza Ride? ..now many before not so..... I think quota sytem is sometimes unfairly used but it has more postivie perks..therefore it should not be abolished.not anytime soon.

Sitara: Apparently, if he was that dumb then he wouldn't be president for two terms.or he is lucky..like some of us assume..umm then why not others..you or me..or anyone... Well, he might not be the brightest guy on the face of the earth but he is smarter than average joe. Maybe he is street smart than book smart..lol I dont consider Bush to be dumb, not really..not from what he has done to himself..

He's not dumb, and he's certainly smarter than that horse-faced Kerry, who I unfortunately voted for. And Bush played Kerry like a violin three months ago. Yeah, so dumb. http://www.vdare.com/sailer/kerry_iq_lower.htm Most significantly, at the age of 22, both men took the IQ-type tests required of candidate military officers. (The U.S. military, which has studied the predictive power of IQ in vastly more detail than any other institution, remains intensely dedicated to the value of intelligence testing.) Bush's scores on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test have been briefly mentioned in the press. But no-one before now has fully explained what they mean. And, even more important, this is first article to publish Kerry's score on the Navy's Officer Qualification Test. The two tests aren't perfectly comparable. But they provide no evidence that Kerry is smarter. If anything, Bush is smarter than Kerry {snip} What kind of IQ does Bush's 1206 SAT imply? Linda Gottfredson, co-director of the University of Delaware-Johns Hopkins Project for the Study of Intelligence and Society, told me: "I recently converted Bush's SAT score to an IQ using the high school norms available for his age cohort. Educational Testing Service happened to have done a study of representative high school students within a year or so of when he took the test. I derived an IQ of 125, which is the 95th percentile."

I would say it is not necessay anymore. When it was introduced, it needed at taht time. But now since everybody has equal oppertunity for education and other resources there is no need for such a previledge.

Although I consider myself a leftist on many social issues, I have some reservations on affirmative action. This may have seemed like a viable way to redress the problem of racial discrimination at the time when it was enacted, I think it has done more harm than good in the long run. By setting a precedence for reverse discrimination, it has not only created just another face of the very notion of discrimination that it was to redress, but by putting racial factors above merit, it may have also served as a disincentive for those who benefit from it to become more competitive. I am not sure if it should be completely eradicated from educational institutions right away -- affirmative action in schools and colleges serve as an OPPORTUNITY for disadvantaged groups to make themselves competitive with everyone else. But when it comes to employment, I think it does more good to uphold merit as a sole criteria for opportunity. Affirmative action in educational institutions should also be seriously considered for a slow but gradual phase out. Afterall, when all is said and done, it is always beneficial to ensure genuine EQUALITY 9or something very close to it) in every aspect of human lives

In a backward society like ours in Nepal, reservation is a must for the upliftment of the impoverished. For they have no other oppurtunities. In developed nations where citizens have equal rights on national welfares, reservation is unnecessary.

No I'ld not want you to flunk. No maam' no way. Me thinks, quota system has it's advantages when we are talking about some minority group who does not have a voice or intellectual, political, material means to influence/present their sufferings, opinions or for that matter are not in 'loop' show what or whether they are capable of doing something that others so conveniently overlook. Also, let us not forget many social and political calmness/balance it brings. I concur with aforementioned opinion by poonte dai.Ideally it is perfect if ONLY qualification for the job is the prime and only criteria. Having said that, let us not forget that we live in the world where there are other aspects which are very critical to keep the balance and maintain harmony between people with different social, religious and geological backgroud. Feeling of belonging is vital for peaceful and sound functioning of the sociaty as a whole. If the minority feels ignored and helpless, unpleasent circumstances might come to the fore. Thus, although quota system should not be blindly justified, it should neverthless stay put for now, until another reasonable solution arises in the horizon. ( By arises, I meant we should work on to it. Feri afai aucha bhaneko hoina :p) Some take advantage of it and some actually gets a stage to present/show their worth which they otherwise would not ever get to show. And to end this all, I also strongly voice for few hundred thousands quota system for Nepalese diasporas. Natraaaaaaa.....hehehehe.:p Hope it helps. Ani ruina ke bhandaicha. Timile ke lekheu rythm?:p Chat ma re. Kyaa ho kyaa. Gup chup gupchup cha ajkal sabai;) IndisGuise:)
