Maoists rape 25 women in Saptari

KATHMANDU, Aug 23 - A group of Maoists raped over two-dozen women at gunpoint, in a Dalit settlement at Jagatpur-4, Saptari district, last week.
The rebels also threatened to "completely destroy" the hamlet if their crime was revealed. The incident came to light only on Monday.

About two-dozen Maoist rebels who had come here five days ago raped females aged between 22 and 35 years in the village. The victims recounted their harrowing experience in front of a group of human rights activists and journalists who reached the village yesterday.

"They (the Maoist rebels) first told us to prepare food," said one of the rape-victims,"After they had eaten, they forcibly carried us inside the house and perpetrated the heinous act in front of our family members." She was raped in the presence of her elderly in-laws.

All the youth have left the village since a long time, due to increasing Maoist atrocities. Only women, children and the elderly remain in the village.

There are about 25 dalit families in the village, which lies north of Koshi riverbank. Locals are terrified after the incident. "If they learn that we told you about the incident, they will come and kill us," said one of the victims, sobbing.

After word spread about the ghastly crime, the Maoist leadership of the area came to the victims and "apologized". "They prostrated themselves at the victims' feet begging forgiveness and also pledged to take action against those involved," said the father-in-law of a victim.

Locals said that Maoist rebels had carried out mass rapes on previous occasions but threats from Maoists had forced them to remain quiet about it. (snn)

Even of they are derranged and psychotic, I don't give a damn. If they cause that much grief they shouldn't be on this planet. Rape should not be tolerated in any sense. No second chance, no 3-strikes, just once and done. It's very simple: you rape, you die. Some people deserve to die. If there is one thing I cannot stand, it is abuse.

Its a heinous crime and I denounce every type of violence, just every type of violence. ( me- a vegetarian by nature, arko thread ma bhane jhai).
But, regarding this news, I will wait for a while before I verify its validity. Fortunately, we now have the United Nation's High Commissioner of Human Rights, Ian Martin. He seems a super-powerful fellow with access to virtually anywhere. So, I always wait for their version of the story, for anything- be it a "royal" atrocity or a Maoist one. And esp for this news because-

For one, it is very unlikely from the normal Maoist trend, they are f**king killers and keep killing men with every brutality imaginable, but mass-rape was never heard of. Besides, the Maoist militia, most of the times, is made of at least 50% of women. Women are normally respected in the Maoist camp more than they would be in a typical rural Nepali household.

For two, it is circulated only by Kantipuronline. Such an event should have been covered by both Nepalnews and Samacharpatra and even BBC alike. The Nepali edition of Kantipur (kantipur daily) has an "apologize" message as its first news item. I could trace that it was regarding yesterday's cartoon of Girija carrying a carcass labelled "rajtantra" out from a container. In a royal mouthpiece "Nispaxa saptahik" under nepalnews.com, they are bashing Kantipur and asking things like the folks at Kantipur be severly punished and so and so.

Plz dont take me wrong, but I still doubt the credibility of this news, it could also be a "canned circulation" under the directorship of the dictatorship as a punishment for Kantipur itself. My suspicion is because a crime of such gravity shuold have been covered by other media outlets as well. I will wait for what Ian Martin says.

Let's wait for the credentials and validity of any news about Maoists atrocities but let?s jump right in and criticize any news about RNA and government?s atrocities.

This raping episode could be a true news. Because it's inside the Maoists group the discussion occurs regarding sexy life and sex behaviours and so on. Want for sex is Natural. In my view, the raping news is 100% correct. This is a very sad and sorry state in Nepal. It's a double rape.... forcing those villagers to cook food for maoists is already a RAPI(NG.

There may be some who commit rape at times of wars just to fend off their sexual frustrations -- mouka ma chouka daau hanou bhanne haru, except that these chouka daau hanna khojne haru are vicious rakchhas. Rape as a more subtle aspect of wars has been a hideous tool of inflicting insult upon people perceived as enemies. Whatever the case, there should absolutely be no room of tolerance to such evil.

A commander (or whatever) is said to have apologized to the community -- khutta dhogera re. This is a joke! If that commander is sincerely apologetic about what his comrades did, then he should help the groups investigating the incident in identifying the perpetrators, so that they can be brought to justice.

Now, since this piece of news is coming from and INDEPENDENT source, human rights organizations must do serious follow ups in order to get to the bottom of this.

War crimes tribunal in Nepal has been long overdue. At least the threat of being prosecuted by such a tribunal and possibly facing grave consequences for their crimes --albeit sooner or years later -- MAY deter SOME from committing such evils. Those who would not be detered should face the REAL prospects of being punished. Commanders and other individuasl higher up in the ranks must also be held accountable for their cadres' crimes.

Those Rapists/Maoists shud be hanged till death! Sala Haru.....
