oie smart asses in sajha, explain this poem to me! please! :) :)

To his Coy Mistress
by Andrew Marvell

Had we but world enough, and time,
This coyness, lady, were no crime.
We would sit down and think which way
To walk, and pass our long love's day;
Thou by the Indian Ganges' side
Shouldst rubies find; I by the tide
Of Humber would complain. I would
Love you ten years before the Flood;
And you should, if you please, refuse
Till the conversion of the Jews.
My vegetable love should grow
Vaster than empires, and more slow.
An hundred years should go to praise
Thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze;
Two hundred to adore each breast,
But thirty thousand to the rest;
An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.

But at my back I always hear
Time's winged chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found,
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song; then worms shall try
That long preserv'd virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust.
The grave's a fine and private place,
But none I think do there embrace.

Now therefore, while the youthful hue
Sits on thy skin like morning dew,
And while thy willing soul transpires
At every pore with instant fires,
Now let us sport us while we may;
And now, like am'rous birds of prey,
Rather at once our time devour,
Than languish in his slow-chapp'd power.
Let us roll all our strength, and all
Our sweetness, up into one ball;
And tear our pleasures with rough strife
Thorough the iron gates of life.
Thus, though we cannot make our sun
Stand still, yet we will make him run.

the author is narrating his feelings to his lover:

if we had (you, the girl and I, the boy) all the time in the world, you being shyyy would not be harmful at all. we would walk down teh ganges and i would pick rubies for you. i would love you forever and forever (till the covernsion of jews: which would never happen, which means the author would love the girl forever; ten years before the flood means i would have loved since the very very beginning, even before teh Noah's Flood occured). if we had inifinte amoutn of time, i would spend hundred years prasing your eyes and another hudnred years praising your breasts and thirty thousand years prasiing the rest of yoru body parts. this means that is how much praise she deserves and that is how much the author is wiling to commit only for her sake.
it is however importatn to note that the author is massively exaggerating his feelings for her. he could not praise her for thirty thousdand years!!! so if you aare analyisng this poem, it is imornat to note that. he exageerates everything becasue he wants the woman to feel important....

if this makes sense, let me know and i will continue with the rest of the poem.

another note: from noahs' flood to conversion of jews means i would love you from the very very beginning of time till the eternity (becasue jews would never convert)

the main point of the poem is that that the author is basically trying to convince his lover, who is shy, to have sex with him.
after telling his lover that he would not mind her being shy and he would be willing to spend thousands of years for her’s sake, it is however not a good idea. “time’s winged chariot hurrying near ” implies that time is like a chariot that is rapidly approaching and soon it will go out of their hand. The two lovers do not have time in their hand forever. Soon enough, the girl’s beauty shall not be found. Her beauty and preserved virginity shall bite the dust, meaning it will just get old and useless. also he says her preserved virginty will be eaten by "worms" in her grave. And his youthful lust and sexual drive will go with him till his death and he will not be able to make use of it while he is stil young and alive: “And your quaint honour turn to dust, And into ashes all my lust. The grave's a fine and private place”. it is therfore not a good idea to save your virginty because time does not wait for everyone and we should make use of it before its too late. it is like 'seize the day' kind of thing u know.

making more sense now? i will follwing with the third analysis.

3rd para:

now the two lovers are still young and lustful; they should make use of this time before its too late. Right now there is a “youthful… morning dew” (meaning the girl is so fresh and young) and there is a fire burning in every pore o the body “every pore with instant fires”. This translates into sexual urges/drives. Therefore while you and I are still young, lets go have sex. Not just sex. The author wants wild sex. “Now let us sport us while we may;
And now, like am'rous birds of prey” birds of prey are wild, raw and fierce. He wants the girl and himself to come onto each other like these untamed birds and “devour” at one another”. Bring all the strength together and roll “Our sweetness, up into one ball” just give in freely, give in all their strength to that moment of lovemaking. so the whole paragraph is just about being wild and fierce with one another and “tear our pleasures with rough strife”. They are going to be soooo passionate that even the sun, something so hot, will not be able to stand their heat. He says we wont’ be able to make our own sun (“though we cannot make our sun”), we are going to be so passionate, we are going to create so much heat as make love, that even the sun wont’ be able to stand this and he will be forced to leave ( “yet we will make him run.).

by now you are problaby enlightend. just read it one more time.

well, it's not exactly a paper but i have to explain the three stanzas that are set up as three different arguments in the poem, find the literary devices and the rhyme scheme of the poem, and a thesis statement for the question : How does Marvell use tone and imagery to show his attitude toward time?? and also list the images that show the tone of the poem and also explain how they show the tone!

:) :)

i hate rhyme schme....
as for literary devices, one of them is definitely massive exagerratoin. exageration of how much time he would willing to spend for her, the sun part is also an exagerration that shows how much he cares about her.
there is some death imagery (worms, ashes, grave etc) that shows time will bring everything to an end.
definelty sexual imagery at the last paragraph. just pick up all the words that imply rough, fierece, wild, etc.
i can tell this is for an AP english class......i took the exam in ktm. shit, it was hard.
