Buddiman he got himself in thi mess. He can get himself out too. He should have thought of all of this before he sent pics to that girl. I would be totally against raising any kind of funds for this guy on this website. Its like asking why that othe Nepali guy in O'hare got detained for carrying a knife right after 9/11. I mean C'mon ...how stoopid can you be ? I seriously do not think people in this site should be collecting money for people that don't have common sense.

Some Nepalese are happy because this Basnet guy is in trouble. These fellow Nepalese think he should be ripped off badly. People who have soft corner for Basnet are blamed somehow. But law is like this, smart people reduce the punishment or bipass the law. Here is an example: - http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,237540,00.html

I was wondering what will happen to his degree. In case he is convicted by court and sent to prison, will he be allowed to pursue his study and complete the degree as I have heard he has only 4-5 months to graduate with a PhD. People in prison are allowed to study and get degree in Nepal, I think there is such provision in US prisons too.

I think we need to financially support Mr. Basnyat's wife and his son if she feels her husband is innocent and wants to hire a good lawyer in order to bring the real story out. But Mr. Basnyat should tell the truth first in order to get our support. I wonder why he has not spoken yet? OR if he is denied to speak? any thoughts?

VincentBodega wrote "....Mr. Basnet has not committed a crime, yet...." Here is as tip for you New Jersey has made it a crime to lure a person from cyberspace to a real place with a criminal purpose in mind. Although A-2864, signed Jan. 18 by Acting Gov. Richard Codey, applies to all means used to lure, the Internet is its focal point. "The bill changes and sends a strong message to Internet predators -- 'you will be punished,'" Codey said. Under the law, it is a third-degree crime to attempt "via electronic or any other means, to lure or entice a person into a motor vehicle, structure or isolated area, or to meet or appear at any place, with a purpose to commit a criminal offense with or against the person lured or enticed or against any other person." for more got to http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1106573732062

Hello Smarties, Heres a reality check for you all: there was no underage kid talking behind that computer. When you read that law so eagerly did the judge at any point mention how entrapment should be factored in? If there had been a real (not an acted out case) case of a kid being solicited, then it is a open and shut case. The law was written for a real life situation, not a hollywood inspired one. Get Mr. Basnet a good lawyer, he will walk free. Fill his jury with idiots with rat brain, he will do 15 years. Also, read what inspired such law: Heisler prosecuted the case that inspired the law, the prosecution of a man who posed as women in an Internet chat room and invited men to come to the women's homes to play out rape fantasies. Two men accepted the invitations and went to two women's homes, but their attempts to gain access were thwarted when the women called police. I guess I dont have to remind a smart one like you that NJ is not GA.

Forty-two states have laws that specifically prohibit electronic luring or solicitation of minors by computer for the purpose of inducing them to engage in illegal sexual conduct. Laws that do not include specific references to electronic communication may still be used against online predators, but specific language can make the laws easier to enforce. see Georgia State is in that list at http://www.ncsl.org/programs/lis/kidnet/lureminorlaws.htm

Here are exact words from Georgia State laws on luring minors for sex on internet. To see all contents of the law, go to Georgia's State Assemly site at http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2003_04/gacode/16-12-100.2.html ".....(e)(1) A person commits the offense of obscene Internet contact with a child if he or she has contact with someone he or she knows to be a child or with someone he or she believes to be a child via a computer on-line service or Internet service, including but not limited to a local bulletin board service, Internet chat room, e-mail, or on-line messaging service, and the contact involves any matter containing explicit verbal descriptions or narrative accounts of sexually explicit nudity, sexual conduct, sexual excitement, or sadomasochistic abuse that is intended to arouse or satisfy the sexual desire of either the child or the person, provided that no conviction shall be had for a violation of this subsection on the unsupported testimony of a child. (2) Any person who violates paragraph (1) of this subsection shall be guilty of a felony and, upon conviction thereof, shall be punished by imprisonment for not less than one nor more than ten years or by a fine of not more than $10,000.00; provided, however, that, if at the time of the offense the victim was 14 or 15 years of age and the defendant was no more than three years older than the victim, then the defendant shall be guilty of a misdemeanor of a high and aggravated nature....."

Again, the person behind the computer was not a real underage girl. So, does this law still hold true?

Bathroom coffee I agree he was wrong but the intention to raise fund is because his wife and kid should not have to go through hell for his wrong deeds. Should not organizations like ANA should take some initiative at least for those 2 ? Just my 2 cents.

Read the words in bold letters carefully "....A person commits the offense of obscene Internet contact with a child if he or she has contact with someone he or she knows to be a child or with someone he or she believes to be a child......" This could have been a serious loophole and used by more of less successfully used in their favour if the words "...or with someone he or she believes to be a child..." were not stated in the law.

Bodega, Use your common sense. he he You really think that he would have sent pictures and had sexual conversation IF HE KNEW THAT THE PERSON ON THE OTHER END WAS A COP TRYING TO ENTRAP HIM ? Its his intentions that are the motive here, not whether he did something or not. I mean the cop's job is to prevent incidents like these from taking place. Buddiman, I have no qualm against people raisning $$ to help his wife and child. Cause they are also the victims of his crime here. I feel sorry that they had to be subjected to this soap opera. Esp for the child.

And all the people that are defending him !!!! Saying that we are giving him too much Gaali ? he he So what do you want to to do ? Congratulate him and give him words of encouragement ? C'mon now. WE AS A SOCIETY SHOULD CONDEMN THIS KIND OF BEHAVIOUR WITH THE LOUDEST VOICE(making it very clear that his kind of behaviour is not acceptable in our Nepali society).
