Thanks for your post. I would put aside my humility for a second and let myself wallow in the plaudits that my writing attracts. If I were you. Yes, a great many men of letters are known for their arrogance (the old Oxonian VS Naipaul included!) and that may well be a fault if I call it so, found in writers - a universal one perhaps. But the reverse seems to be true in your case, and I will call that a fault as well!! One brainy git once said - 'all great men have great faults'. A food for thought, John, and thanks again.

Very interesting incident, and well written. You got the knack to write stories. Keep writing...

Indeed such an interesting story to come up with...... get rare opportunities to come across such a magnificent writing....Loitering around the sajha kurakani i glanced at the " sixth avenue heartache" several times, but never though i would be jubilant. It was a monday afternoon and as usual skimmed through kurakani. This time I decided to go through the "sixthe avenue heartache" thread. And guess what....As I was going through the article, I kept telling myself how could I miss such an interesting writing and concluded that this very writer "John" could entice many people through his writing..:D:D:D.....
The story of yours reminded of my own story. I was preety much in the similar situation. My story begun about a year ago or maybe a little more. One day I decided to go to Nepalnews chat room. There i met this person and as far as I know he initiated the conversation. I was reluctant initilally, but then started to feel the comfort as we begun our conversation. I have always liked my anonimity and I still do....Hence, I ended up lying about my whereabouts, as most of the people do in the chat arena. we started talking in the same chat room and after a while agreed to chat on MSN. I lied and had to lie more to make my other lies real. I pretended not to understand Nepali ..and whenever he tried to converse in nepali he would translate it in english..:D...and I even lied that i grew up in the mixture of Nepali and Irish environment. Lies...Lies...and more Lies.....and he would ask me the current time of the place where i lived...i would go to google and search for the current time...:D:D:D..Maybe he was kinda dubious about my lies..But still my lies were never ending.....But lies were unintentional...Came from nowhere...i've always enjoyed talking to him....At times, I wouldn't understand some of the vocabulary he used..so I even had to go to word document to get the synonyms..:D:D:D....Almost after a year, I felt I should tell him who I was and where I was from. And guess what I did...and it was preety much obvious that he did not like the idea of my lying to him....no one would like it anyways....I still talk to him every now and then....He does throw sarcasm at times and I've gained the title of "Guffadi #1"....Oh well..I deserve affter all those lies...:(......Would like to write more but gotta attend the class......
And as LahureJi said, indeed John has a natural flair and so you do LahureJi..I always enjoy Sitara, Indisguise, Nirman's article.....Simple yet so enticing....Keep on coming with such intensity...:D:D..

hey john, great peace of writing buddy. you got a great writing skill, wish i could write like that. i do not have good english, no wonder i got very poor score in gre verbal, so always fascinated by good writings. i guess i can not express in writing and the lack of vacabulary adds up for not being able to express well. i am regular visitor of site and liked your earlier writings as well. i also liked writing of oys, who i believe is a very talent individual. keep it coming guys. hope to get chance to read more of your sweet memories. by the say, did i say that, i can also identify myself as you in this peace, what i am trying to say here is, i also used to chat a lot and had many circumtances where i used to wait for long time to see the pop up of msn singing in of the ones that i liked most to chat with. cyber age i guess.

Gre has never been a yardstick for good writing skills, I try and use little vocabulary to make it interesting and readable.
And mind you....I IMITATE, I copy my lines from the great writers of all times, not leaving aside few extremely good writers in sajha itself. So cheer up...only feelings matter...not words.

Your humbleness knows no bounds, and this is one part of your personality perhaps that is endearing to those of us who follow your threads with interest: your preparedness to embrace constructive criticisms with an open mind. Enough said about your writing prowess already - that's a 'stand alone'.

About my being a scrutinizing reader. Well, I don't know but if at all, then it ought to be my uncle that I must have borrowed it from. I literally grew up in his shadow, and as a child, I would always marvel more at his eloquence than his long big book case that adorned his study room. He loved his friends' company and vice versa, and most importantly, loved talking about literature - his single most passion - over sips of Ilam tea. All this I observed with much curiosity and as I grew older, I slowly learnt how to enjoy and also be part of that setting, though what they were talking about made very little made sense to me at the time but I was happy all the same with my lot as their silent audience. Theirs was a Romantic pursuit perhaps, something that took roots deep in the frustrations they felt at a repressive time they were living in - the Panchayat era. It was during these countless sit-ins with him that I learned about the great many luminaries of the Western literary canon - Shakespeare, Milton, Dickens, Ibsen, Wilde, Kipling, and the younger ones, Sartre, Hemingway, Camus et al. So, I knew deep down the inherent value of such an exercise and I was not wrong. The single most gain was the love of reading that I was able to realise I could indulge in and later, develop. Much of my way of thinking is derived from my experience with him and that might, I think, answer for this 'scrutinizing' part that you mention above. A long way to go yet though before I can fully learn to scrutinize, for myself, the 'meat' of any prose or poetry but most importantly, learn to enjoy as well as dislike what I read. And reading your stories and those by other Sajha writers have no doubt sharpened my perspective further on how best to achieve that end state.

Okay I have gone a little off tangent there. Oh, thanks for your info on SITARA - will try and not miss her threads. About 'The Interpreter of Maladies' - cracking read. Can't say about Lahiri's novel though - Namesake as I have yet to read it. Will do when I have time. Will sign off for today.

We all suffer from all those proclivities you mention - our willingness to go one step further as it were to prove a point. A universal human folly, so don't worry and like John said, as long as it doesn't hurt the other party, it's fine - lying or not. And besides, you at least had the decency of telling him the truth - some people don't. And that matters. Cheerio.

Thanks for reading my comments. A wee bit long though - I like to keep my comments to a bare minimum but you tend to get carried away at times. About the little tag that I end my posts with, my end refrain rather - Carpe diem. I hope you're not joking by asking me to explain what it means. Anyway, it's a Latin phrase which means sieze the day/moment or something to that effect. Supposed to have been used by some famous Roman poets. Don't exactly know who - Ovid, Catalus et al. (note: Don't know Latin hai, in case you were wondering!)

Rarely do we come across such humble replies, you are one of a kind....raised under such an aesthetic environment surely hones one's skill as a sensitive reader and writer. Your wrods shore up your feelings as an adept writer. It is really nice coming across you.

As far as history is concerned, I must say that we have a few things in common. My mom is a high school teacher and therefore access to all noteworthy creations by famous writers came in handy. There were times I read till I dropped...wish I had the same tempo and enthusiasm now. But yes....surrounded by books made me ponder over petty details and concise writing...which I do not know if I am able to engulf in my anecdotes....it is for you all to decide.

On a different note, I am curious about your pseudonym....wonder where did you get that from. Are you in military?Were you selected for sandhurst? I am wondering since I once was a student in army school in bhaktapur a decade ago and ever since I have tried to keep track of all old military officials.
