I enjoy Abhi sir's writing and that was the main reason behind starting this thread. I don't know about Ignatieff and and so can't say whther Prof. Abhi has used his statement in its intended meaning or not, but, for sure, the empire is indifferent. Is there any reason or logic in Abhi sir being denied visa? Is he a probable terrorist? Is it possible that he will overstay and work illegally? These Americans, despite their large noise, are indifferent and act in whim. If Abhi sir is not eligible for visa, then who is eligible?
For those who say "sour grapes" etc., please read the article well. he is not crying, but just wondring the reason for denial. If you were denied visa, you would go to a BHATTI and gulp some LOCAL. He, at least, gave us a nice article to read.

Following your postings in Sajha karmarana, anybody can say you are insane.

Gautam Buddha:
You said "If Abhi sir is not eligible for visa, then who is eligible? ". I was.
I was denied a visa once because I was as arrogant as Abi sir. I thought I have a MS from AIT and I did not have necessary parers ready for the visa. Once she denied the visa my ego was shattered. I re-applied with extra papers that she asked and no question was asked. Abhi sir thought that he is a well known professor and he has absolute right to get the visa. No one has. He is as arrogant that he is saying that he doesn't have time to reapply.

Youcanfly,
He had all the necessary documents as far as I can see from his article. About reapplying, your case and his case may be different. The program which he was going to attend could already be over before reapplying and getting visa. Just a thought though, he knows the reality.

Hey Karma Rana,
Can you ever write such essay defending this essay? If this is your way to defend then look at the difference between your words and his words. Altough, you don't know Abhi Subedi, at least you should have known his quality while reading the essay. However Abhi Sir is so generous that he doesn't care of what you say. There are not even 1% of the people who got American visa has the quality of Dr. Subedi. Do you think all good people get visa, do you think all bad ones get rejected? Man, if america needs people then it can get dunkeys and monkeys so that they can be fully loaded their backs and watch the dance of Anarkali(Monkeys).

BornInNewYork,
No doubt it is a nice piece of writing. But, it is note the ultimate.
There is room for editing.
For example, read this section:
Like the protagonist ........nowhere making him guess who could be his enemy
^^^^^^^^^^^
It should have been: who could his enemy be...

By pointing this, I am not saying I can write better. He is an accomplished writer and a fine professor, I stand nowhere close. Namaste.

If Abhi sir is not eligible for visa, then who is eligible?

Above thinking itself is wrong. Abhi doesn't have the rights that guarantees his visa approval. He can apply for the USA visa (Hongkong clearly advised that nepalese cannot for HK visa anymore), but why is he mad that it was rejected. Everybody knows, if you apply US visa, it's up to them whether to give you visa or not.

You went to apply the visa, got rejected.. then comes back home and write an article denouncing USA's hegemony? That's your Abhi Sir... pretty dumb Sir of yours.

Don't show your treaful faces crying " Oh my respected Abhi Sir being criticized".

Detach yourself from such attachments. look at Abhi, not Abhi Sir, and analyze the situation.. of course the image you see and I see are different, because you image of Abhi is affected by the prejudice of having respect for him.

I don't need to take into account he wrote before or what he did before this event of cisa dispproval happened... I am analyzing his this act of stupidity based on only this event itself. It doesn't mean that he did all good in the past and so his current mistake/stupir mistake should be forgiven or we shold keep quiet about it.

Gautam B. : you wrote a nice para "If you were denied visa, you would go to a BHATTI and gulp some LOCAL. He, at least, gave us a nice article to read."

except the last sentence, which he made a mistake... he should have gone to LOCAL bhatti !! The article itself is a product of defeated mind.

LOL! This Karmarana Dude is funny! What makes you think this article by Abhi Subedi is product of defeated mind. It's your twisted mind Dude! - it's not that Abhi's mind is defeated.

By the way the Author, Michael Ignatieff, that Abhi Subedi has referred in the article is a Canadian Politician. He is trying to be a leader of the opposition party in Canada(Liberal Party of Canada). If you guys are interested to read the doctrine Abhi has mentioned, here is the link.

And about Michael Ignatieff:

ha ha... Michael Ignatieff said those things to grab the leadership of the party... so what's the purpose of Abhi's quoting him?

His visa dispproval made him mad.. right? and so he wrote the article? What a fug ged up idea is that?

Now think about this... if his visa was approved, would he come back home that night and written an article mentioning baout USA hegemony quiting Michael Ignatieff???

Try to be logical... and if you are you will clearly see that Abhi is screwd up man, an insane man.

I am sure he would write, but it would be after the US trip. Writer needs topics to write. I am sure that article would be more interesting to read than this one. Probably he would look US differently than ordinary others.

Yeah, I hope that would happen, but unfortunately it didn't happen. The Visa was denied. that's how only we came to know that this man has a low mentality. Because USA didn't give him visa, he is shouting about USA's hegemony.

I am not completely denying "USA's hegemony" though. I might agree about that concept.. but I do not agree the way Abhi raised the issue simply because the visa was denied and he missed the FREE trip?

I have a lot of personal respect for Abhi dai.
I have known him well since 1996, ever since he came to gave a presentation on
literary theory at Martin Chautari.

I use the phrase personal respect in the sense that he is a genial, friendly and kind-hearted man with a great sense of humor.

In the Nepali arts world (drama, paintings, fine arts, literary works, etc), Abhi Dai is the CLOSEST thing to a patron saint in Kathmandu. He is someone who is a genuinely nice man, and encourages younger people to do interesting work in the arts.

[Had he been an American, he would have been one happy professor at some leafy liberal arts college somewhere in Western Massachusetts , inviting undergrads home
for dinner, discussing Shakespeare and politics until the wee hours of the night . . .
you get the picture!]

But I do NOT the have required qualifications to comment on his professional accomplishments. That, I would leave to others who know better.

But as someone trained to understand words and numbers, I can read two articles
side by side, and try to understand what the writers are saying in a spirit of
INQUIRY.

This is where I find Abhi Dai's -- in that article -- casting Ignatieff as a fellow-critic of
the US Empire a rather odd proposition, considering that Ignatieff is a liberal who intriguingly SUPPORTS the US "hegemony" to such an extent that he has even come
up with controversial arguments in SUPPORT of his thesis.

Abhi Dai's points would have far more credible if he had cited, say, Noam Chomski or someone else critical of the US.

By citing Ignatieff, it makes me wonder:

1) whether Abhi has read Ignatieff's stuff
2) whether Abhi dai has understood Ignatieff's stuff
3) whether Abhi dai's sentences on Ignatieff were deleted by editors (this too happens all the time in Nepal; writer write one thing, but editiors edit in such a way that the writings come out differently!)
4) whether Abhi dai confused Ignatieff with someone else.
5) whether Abhi dai simply made a judgment of error (happens all the the time when you have to submit an article to meet a deadline).

Any ONE of those possibility exists, and that's fine -- and I am simply raising the issue for what I hope would be a stimulating kurakani that does NOT get personal.

Tetti ho.

BTW, here are extracts from Ignatieff's bio on wikipedia:

Ignatieff has written extensively on the subject of international development, peacekeeping, and the international responsibilities of Western nations. Critical of the limited-risk approach practiced by NATO in conflicts like the Kosovo War and the Rwandan Genocide, he has argued for a more active involvement and larger scale deployment of land forces by Western nations in future conflicts in the developing world.

In this vein, Ignatieff was a prominent supporter of the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, a position that was controversial among Liberals.[6] He argued that America had inadvertently established "an empire lite, a global hegemony whose grace notes are free markets, human rights and democracy, enforced by the most awesome military power the world has ever known." The burden of that empire obliged America to expend itself unseating Iraqi president Saddam Hussein in the interests of international security and human rights. Containment through sanctions and threats would not prevent Hussein from selling weapons of mass destruction to international terrorists, Ignatieff asserted, erroneously believing those weapons were still being developed in Iraq.[7] Moreover, according to Ignatieff, "what Saddam Hussein had done to the Kurds and the Shia" in Iraq was sufficient justification for the invasion.[8] [9]

In the years following the invasion, Ignatieff has reiterated his support for the war's aims, if not the method in which it was conducted. "I supported an administration whose intentions I didn't trust," he averred, "believing that the consequences would repay the gamble. Now I realize that intentions do shape consequences."[6]

One challenge for anyone working in Nepal is this: How do you disagree with or differ from or even question the thoughts of someone senior and elder in Nepal without coming across like a jerk?

I don't know the answer.

But I, for one, am certainly willing to engage in some trial-and-error expreriments to explore ways to find some sort of a balance. That's because it's increasingly clear that our seniors and elders in Nepal mean well, but, often, they might NOT and do NOT
know everything that's out there.

Somehow, Nepali traditions, the ones we grew up with, hold us back from engaging in free discussions with and about our seniors and elders, and we fear offending or disrespecting them.

But in a democracy -- in a public sphere -- it's getting increasingly important to bring diverse, alternative views, even when they CONTRADICT the existing mainstream views of the elders and seniors.

Again, how does one find a balance (assuming one needs such a balance) is something I remain quite ignorant yet curious about.

I find so many mistakes in my own postings above . . .Haray Shiva!

San, is there any way to put in a prompter to spell-check and edit one's posts
BEFORE posting them on Sajha?

Just a thought.

Of course, it would be ideal if people did that on their own, but in the heat of thinking fast and typing fast and posting quickly . . .

I walked out of the old Rana house wiser and unburdened.

Read that sentence more carefully. The use of word "unburdened" itself is telling LOUDLY and CLEARLY how irritated he was then to miss the free trip to USA, and yet to hide that bitterness he tried to protect him by putting "wiser" in front of that. ha ha ha. I can't stop laughing at the mentality of the writer at the time he wrote this article.

And even before that, note how he used "RANA" house. What's the purpose of doing that??????? That last sentence in the article is enough to tell us what a screwed up mentality he has.

Don't just praise the so called intellectuals writings/articles/novel simply because they are elders, older, teachers, Sirs, father, mother, kaka, mama. That attitude should be shed off by the young generation of Nepal. I agree with Ashu.

karmarana,

You have said the same thing over and over again. Its starting to get a little old making you sound a little retarted. And, yes I am writing this after having read the article and having called Prof. Subedi's remarks a case of sour grapes.
